Introducing Gimhae Potters Society

This Society is composed of about 80 potters who specialize in making pottery. As shown previously, this Society has the history of about 20 years. The potters have promoted friendship among the members as well as have held exhibitions every year.
In particular, they have remarkably contributed to the development of Gimhea’s ceramic industry as they have held ceramic festival every year.

The Origin of Gimhae Potters Village

The potters’ villages are being spread over Jangyu, Jinyeong, Saengnim, Hallim, etc. centering around Jillye.
Although some pottery workshops had been kept alive until the later half of the 1960s, yet those functions were insignificant. Meanwhile, Smitz a Japanese surveyed Korean districts and founded Garak ceramic plant in Jangyu of Gimhae suitable to natural features, in 1974, where he made Buncheong. This is the origin of pottery workshops in Gimhae district.

Afterwards, Kim Choon-shik, a Korean resident in Japan, founded Gimhae ceramic plant in Jillye and made Buncheong such as tea bowels, water cups, homeware, etc. Like so, Gimhae’s ceramic art had rooted. In the 1980s, pottery workshops had rooted centering around Jillye and those numbers rapidly increased. Currently, 80 pottery workshops and 120 ceramic plants are in Jillye and Gimhae district, respectively.
The pottery produced in Gimhae district is mostly Buncheong, and those are mostly homeware suitable to kitchen works.

Most potters deeply study various methods on ceramic manufacture in order that they may succeed to traditional pottery, centering on young potters. There is good outlook for the future of Gimhae ceramic art.
The pottery workshops in Gimhae carry out diversifying and smartening products, considering economical efficiency, traditional specifics, productivity, standardization, etc. Likewise, they have contributed to the popularization of ceramic culture based on reality, and will develop traditional art into modern art suitable to modern life, based on aesthetics.
