The Goryeo Period

The provincial system of Goryeo

The most significant features of the provincial system of the Goryeo period is that the status of an administrative district was elevated or demoted according to the degree of contribution to strengthening regal power. At the beginning of the Goryeo period, the districts that helped King Wang Geon found Goryeo were raised in status, but the districts that stood against King Wang Geon was demoted. In late Goryeo, the status of a district was decided according to those as a rebellion or the degree of contribution to defeating Japanese pirates or Gimhae was no exception. King Wang Geon, after founding Goryeo in 936, demoted Gimhae Sogyeong to Gimhaebu in 940. Later, Gimhaebu was further demoted to Imhaehyeon, and then, raised to Imhaegun. In 971, King Gwangjong raised it to Gimhaebu, and in 995, King Seongjong significantly elevated its status to Andongdohobu. In 1,000, King Mokjong raised it to Andongdaedohobu. King Hyeongjong changed it to Geumju in 1012. In 1309, the first year of King Chungseon, it was raised to Geumjumok, and in 1311, his third year, it was changed to Gimhaebu.

The status of Geumju

The data form which we can infer the status of Gimhae in the Goryeo period are as follows. First, Andongdaedohobu was established in Gimhae as an administrative institution of Yeongdongdo. Second, other administrative districts, besides the Gimhae area, were governed by Geumju. The Haman, Changwon, Masan, Chilwon and Jinhae areas were the districts that were controlled by Gimhae. Third, the defence commander of Geumju received 100 seom of rice as a salary, and the ones in Ulsan, Yecheon, Yangsan and Andong got the same amount of rice. In view of the fact that the mayor of Gaeseong, the captal of Goryeo, received 86 seom or so, the salary of the Geumju defence commander shows the importance of Geumju in the Goryeo period.

Transportation and industry of Geumju

According to The history of Goryeo, the transportation system of Goryeo consisted of twenty-two 'do' and 525 'yeok'[station], and Geumjudo had 31 'yeok'.

In the Goryeo period, Daedong, Jangyu, Noksan and Saenrim area in Gimhae were involved with iron production.

Uprisings of farmers in Geumju

In late Goryeo, as the ruling class' exploitation of farmers was getting severe, farmers left the farm to lead a wandering life or rebelled against the ruling class. In August of 1200, there was a farmer's uprising in Geumju only to be all killed by police and the rich.

There was another uprising in January of 1293 that was led by low-ranking government officers. They killed a high-ranking government officer, by which Geumju was once demoted to Hyeon.
