「Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) of Korea, South Gyeongsang Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Gimhae, Haman County, Goryeong County」
Local governments sign MOU to work together to have Gaya Tombs designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage
◯ To have the “ancient tombs in Daesing-dong, Gimhae, in Marisan Mountain, Haman and in Jisan-dong, Goryeong” (“Gaya Tombs’) designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage, the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) of Korea, 2 provincial governments and 3 local governments joined hands.
◯ The City of Gimhae announced that it will be signing an MOU on the 21st with the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) of Korea, South Gyeongsang Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Haman County and Goryeong County to work together on having Gaya Tombs designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage
◯ Based on this MOU, the parties will provide all the administrative and financial support needed to successfully have Gaya Tombs designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage. The ‘World Heritage Gaya Tomb Committee’ will be established and through this committee, the parties will cooperate with each other in jointly preserving and utilizing Gaya Tombs even after the tombs have successfully been designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage
◯ After the signing of the MOU, the parties will establish relevant regulations, a foundation and office to start working on the World Heritage application process.
◯ “The parties were already working together on this matter even before this MOU but without a firm foundation, we couldn''''t really speed up the working process. Now, we believe that after signing this MOU, we could work more efficiently towards having our wonderful Gaya Tombs designated as UNESCO’s World Heritage.” said an official from the city of Gimhae.
◯ Gaya Tombs was included in the Tentative List of UNESCO’s World Heritage in December 2013 and after the deliberation of the World Heritage Department under the Cultural Heritage Administration, Gaya Tombs and Korea’s traditional mountain temples were selected as the UNESCO World Heritage priorities last March.
