Through academic surveys carried out to understand the ancient ceramics production system in the Gimhae region, 12 kiln sites for earthenwares, porcelains and roof tiles have been discovered.

The kiln site discovered in the Sangdong region was located in a place called "Gam-mul-ah-hyang" in the Goryeo Dynasty period and "Gam-mum-ah-chon" in the Joseon Dynasty period. According to Sejongsillokjiriji (世宗實錄地理志, The Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong), this was where low-grade porcelains were made.

In 2016, the emergency trial excavation of the "Gimhae Sangdong Buncheong Ceramics Kiln Site", provided clues for understanding the birth of and changes in Buncheong Ceramics and its transition to the Baekja (white porcelains) culture. The kiln site was recognized for its historical value and was designated as Monument No. 288 of Gyeongsangnam-do in July 2017. Also, in 2019, 3 porcelain kilns from mid to late 17th century have been discovered through an excavation survey of the white porcelain kiln site in Daegam-ri, Sangdong-myeon, Gimhae and in 2020, porcelain kiln sites across Sangdong-myeon were studies through in-depth field surveys.

And these surveys have confirmed that here in Sangdong-myeon, a large scale ceramics district has continued to exist from the early Joseon Dynasty period to the 17th~18th century.*
