Gimhae which was the center of the ancient Gaya Confederacy in the Korean Peninsula, is a city with a long history of crafts.

Gimhae's ceramics culture which is famous for Gaya Ceramics and Buncheong Ceramics of the Joseon Dynasty, is constantly evolving into a creative industry through development of modern household goods and modernization projects like incorporating new technologies to utilize ceramics as an architectural material. In Gimhae, there are about 270 craft businesses and there is a creative place called Gimhae Workshop Village comprised of some 40 craft businesses involved in creative, hands-on training and business activities.

Also, there are about 120 ceramics businesses and most of the ceramics businesses and ceramics production infrastructure can be found in Jillye-myeon. There is also the Clayarch Gimhae Museum which is the world's first architectural ceramics museum and Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum which was established to preserve and promote the Buncheong Ceramics tradition. Gimhae Support Center for Small Ceramics Manufacturers is also providing support to develop Gimhae's ceramics industry into a strong, creative industry. As the center of Korean ceramics culture, Gimhae is planning to achieve sustainable development by modernizing the traditional ceramics industry by focusing on Buncheong Ceramics and tea bowls.

Being designated as a legal cultural city by the Korean government and by striving to become a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Gimhae plans to plan the future of the city based on creative innovation in its ceramics tradition and its creative industry.
